1990 Nissan Maxima V6, Shakes and Runs Rough

by Mel
(San Francisco, CA USA)

My Nissan Maxima is running rough and shakes a lot when I start or stop the car. It only runs good when I am driving it and my check engine light goes on. What is this caused by?

Steve Says,

The most likely cause of your problem is an engine misfire. This is probably the cause of your engine running rough and the reason for the check engine light as well.

If you take your car somewhere to have the codes read (most auto parts stores will do it for free) it should tell you which cylinder is misfiring (if this really is what is going on) and that will help you figure it out.

If you have not had a tune up in a while then you might just have a fouling spark plug or a wire that needs replaced. It could also be a problem with the fuel system or another part of the ignition system.

I hope this helps!
