1999 Chevy Malibu

by Ms. Roberts

Hello, I hope you can help me. I got the serpentine belt replaced on my car. It ran quietly the first 10 minutes but after I parked it and started up again, it makes a loud chirping noise when I press on the gas. It lasts about 15-20 minutes then stops. Does this mean the belt needs adjusting or can it be something else.

Steve Says,

Thanks for asking me your question. There are several things that could be happening. You serpentine belt tensioner could be faulty. If it is then it might not be able to keep enough tension on the belt which makes it squeal.

You could have a problem with one of your pulley bearings or they could have installed the wrong belt for your car. This is not likely but it is possible.

The most likely cause is a bad tensioner. I hope this has helped.
