Removing the Latch Mechanism by: John (Tucson, AZ)
8 Jan 2011 - Removing the Latch Mechanism: I've got the same problem that the driver's door won't open after replacing the interior door handle. The dealer price for the latch mechanism is about $165, so I'd like to fabricate something if I can get the mechanism out. To remove the 3 (latch mechanism) bolts requires a Torx bit, size T-30. I got a Torx bit set at Home Depot for about $8. After removing those 3 bolts I'm still stuck on disengaging the latch mechanism from multiple rods. Two colored rotating clips simply un-snap from their rods but the other clips won't unsnap.

I took off the drivers door panel and put the new handle on so I could see what was happening with the rod when I try to open the door. When I pull the the handle, nothing happens. When I tug the rod, nothing happens. When I pull the rod towards me-while I'm sitting in the drivers seat-then pull the handle, it opens! So, the rod has to somehow be kept flush against the panel interior in order for the door handle to work. I can see where the rod connects inside the door but nothing is missing or broken that I can tell. Is there a something that keeps the rod in place?
Steve Says,
Many cars do have some type of clip that connects to the door and keeps the rod in place. You can try checking with your dealership to see if they show one, or you could remove the passenger door panel to see if it has one.
Even if it does need one of these clips it should still open when you either push or pull on the rod with your hands. I know it is a pain but if it were me I would probably take one of the other door panels off to see how they work and make sure that you get the right part.
