2001 Chevy Tahoe makes a loud sound when pressing on accelerator

by Pam
(Phoenix, AZ)

Hi, when I drive and press on the gas after I start it. It makes this weird sound like plastic bags caught in a fan belt. We have looked and don't see any thing! This only happens when I press on the accelerator. But if I ease off the gas pedal, it stops. What could this be?

Steve Says,

Hi, Pam thanks for visiting my website and asking me your question.

These types of car repair questions are always the hardest. Since I am not there to hear this noise I have to imagine what plastic bags getting stuck in the fan belt sounds like! I'll do my best to help you out, but there is really no way for me to accurately pinpoint this problem. Hopefully I can point you in the right direction.

You said that you looked and didn't see anything in the fan belt. This is good, that would be the first step. The next thing to do is have someone help you by getting into the truck and stepping on the accelerator pedal and you listening for the noise to see which part of the engine it is coming from. If you can tell which area it is coming from then you have a start.

The nest thing to do is inspect your serpentine belt very carefully. You are looking for lots of cracks, glazing (if your engine belt is really shiny, then it is considered glazed), missing pieces, etc. You basically just want to make sure the belt is in good condition.

If it looks good then the next thing to do (and this will take some mechanical skills and a belt diagram) is to remove the belt and start the engine for just a few seconds to see if the sound is there. What you are trying to do here is rule out all of the pulleys that the belt goes around. If the sound is still there then you know it has nothing to do with the pulleys or pulley bearing. If it goes away when you remove the serpentine belt then you know that it is either because of the belt itself or it is because of one of the pulleys that the belt goes around. All of those pulleys have bearings that could be going bad and making the sound that you hear.

These are the first things to check with your car problem. If you still can't find the problem after all of this then you might consider taking it to a good repair shop. It probably would not take them too long to figure this problem out.

If you are going to take the belt off you will need a good serpentine belt diagram. One of the best places to get that is by clicking on the banner below. You will be taken to Alldata. It is an online repair manual where you can find all the same information that dealership technicians use to work on your car. You will be able to find the diagram there along with anything else you want to know about your car. Here is the banner:
