I just bought a 2002 Chevy Malibu (used) & the lock button as well as window shifter buttons are all loose. Granted they work, but i have to mess with them a bit! Can that be fixed? By me, or even at a shop?
Steve Says,
Thanks for asking me your question. It sounds like you are talking about the buttons on the door panel of your car. If this is the case then the most likely cause of your problem is that part of the piece that holds the whole assembly in has broken.
This is something that probably would be better left to a professional. Sometimes you have to take the door panel off and that can be a very tough thing to do. Sometimes however you can pry the lock button and window button assembly out of the door panel. Once you get it out you simply unplug the old one and plug in the new one.
This type of problem is common on older cars. Pretty much all of these types of car parts are plastic and it degrades over time. Luckily there are a lot of websites online that you can find to buy parts like these. If you are looking for a cheap part you can get them at many online auto parts stores, but if you are looking for a good quality part you should probably get it from the dealership. They will charge a lot more for it, but the part will be of a little better quality.
The other thing you can do if you are a frugal shopper or just need to find the cheapest part possible is to get a used window switch from a junkyard. Junkyard parts are sometimes a good option. Many times they are very cheap compared to a new part and you can also get them to come down on their prices sometimes. If you decide to try to call an auto parts recycler to buy this part you should try to find one that came from a vehicle with low miles, the lower the better. This just means that they parts on the car have not gotten as much use as a car with higher mileage so they should be in better condition. When you are buying used car parts you want to find the ones that are not already worn out from being used. I hope this helps.
