2002 Dodge Ram, Starts But Won't Stay Running
My 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 automatic 4.7 liter V8 was running fine and all of a sudden I went to start it and it started fine but it won't stay running unless I keep pressing the gas peddle. I cant even back out of my parking space before it dies. I also smell gasoline when I try to start it and keep it running. My only vehicle and I'm on a tight budget, please help with suggestions on what the problem is. Thanks and God bless.
Steve Says,
Thanks for asking me your question. Unfortunately I will not be able to help you out much because there are so many things that can cause this type of a problem.
The first thing that might be causing it is your Idle Air Control valve or IAC. Your trucks computer uses this to control the amount of air going into the engine when you are not stepping in the gas pedal. This is how it controls the idle speed. If your truck won't stay running when it is supposed to be idling but runs fine the rest of the time then this is one of the first things I would check.
There could be a problem with one of your other sensors (like the MAF or Mass Airflow Sensor) but that will normally affect how it runs all the time.
I wish I could help more. Good luck with your truck...when you get it fixed please return to my website and comment on your question to let me and my website users know what the problem was.
