2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Shaking

by Peter Bendera
(Grand Junction, CO USA)

My 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel 4x4 shakes when I'm turning. It never happened before until I was leaving a small parking lot and turned my steering wheel all the way to the right. Since that time this happens every time I turn at slow speeds (both ways).

Steve Says,

The first thing you should check is that your truck is not in 4 wheel drive. If it is it can cause this type of slow speed shake. The next most likely cause is u-joints that are getting worn. They will cause a shake, especially when turning. These are the two most likely causes that come to mind, but it could also be a problem with other things like wheel bearings, tires, rims, etc.

I would check out the simple things first like the u-joints, tires, etc. There should be very little play in all of the u-joints. If there is a lot then they need to be replaced.

Check the tread on your tires. Make sure they are worn nice and evenly. If they are not they can cause similar problems. Most tire problems are noticed at higher speeds but it is possible that it could happen at low speeds. It is unlikely though.

I hope this has helped you with your car shaking problem!
