P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

by Hollie
(Springfield, MO USA)

Do you know what would cause this check engine light code on a 2000 Chrysler Concorde?

Steve Says,

Hi Hollie, thanks for using my website!

OBD Code P0353 is a caused by a problem with your ignition system on cylinder number 3. Usually it means that the computer is sending a signal to the cylinder 3 spark plug and cable but the computer has sensed that this signal is not getting there correctly. I'm guessing you are having some other symptoms as well, like a misfire, maybe your engine is shaking and your car is probably not running very well.

It is very important that you get this problem taken care of right away because if your engine is misfiring it will be causing other damage. Most of the time this code is not too expensive to fix, but every once in a while it does get costly (sometimes but not often the cars computer will cause this code).

The most common cause of this check engine code p0353 is a bad ignition coil. Some people will just replace the cylinder 3 coil when this OBD code comes up, but I do not recommend that as there are several other things that could be causing it.

You should check all of your wiring to and from your ignition coils. Especially check the connectors to the coils as if they have gotten loose it could cause this code. Especially check anywhere it looks like the wires are rubbing on anything. It is possible that the wires have rubbed through and are causing a short to ground.

Code p0353 can also sometimes be caused by bad spark plugs or wires. If it has been a while since you have had a tune up then you should probably get one done anyway. If you don't want to do a whole tune up you can just check the spark plug, wire and coil for the #3 cylinder. You can also switch them to a different cylinder to see if the code follows the coil (If you switch it with the number 2 cylinder and then you start getting p0352 then you know that the problem is in one of the components that you switched).

It is possible that the computer on your car has gone bad and that is what is causing this code, but this is unlikely. Most of the time it is something else. If you check out all the stuff I mentioned and you still haven't found the problem then you might start suspecting the computer, but I would advise you to get it checked out by a professional before you replace it as they can be expensive.

I hope this has helped. Please leave me a comment if you need more help or when you figure this problem out.
