Thanks for your comment Steve but that sounds to me like a very remote solution to the transmission providing a hard shift condition. What does the brake switch have to do with the transmission?

Great question! Many people think the exact same thing. On older cars there would be no relation between the brake switch and the transmission. On newer cars however there is a connection.
If your cars computer thinks that the brakes are being put on (possibly caused by a bad brake switch) then it could be giving the transmission faulty signals and making it not shift correctly.
There are other possibilities here, but I gave you the most likely solution.
