Rover K Series 16v 2004 rattling noises

I have a 2004 Rover MGZS 16V K SERIES. I have a tapping (rattling) noise when idling which seems to disappear when RPM's increase. If coming on and off the gas quickly when driving I get a clonking noise. I have been told various things might be causing it, from oil pressure to cam followers and the mechanic who works on my car says the gearbox cluster is the problem? 6 months ago I had new head and 2 months ago I had performance cam fitted any ideas?

Thanks for the question Jim! First I need to say that I do not have experience with your specific vehicle as I work in the U.S. However, I think the problem you are having is not something specific to your make and model of car.

There are several things that normally cause this type of a noise. The first thing to check is your oil level and condition. If it is low or has not been changed in a while it can cause this noise. Oil pressure is definitely suspect. If you do not have an oil pressure gauge on your instrument cluster then you need to do an oil pressure test (or have a mechanic do this for you). A gauge needs to be connected directly to the engine block oil galley so the pressure can be read. Be sure that it is read with the engine cold as well as fully warmed up. This is the most likely cause of a problem like you are having. Things that can cause low oil pressure are things like a worn oil pump, worn engine bearings, worn camshaft bearing journals, etc.

It is possible that the problems you are having now are related to the work that you have recently had done to your car. You might consider taking your car back to the repair shop that did the work if it is under warranty. Most auto repair shops will give you a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty (that's what they do here in the US anyway).

Other things that can cause this noise are things like torque converter bolts (if you have an automatic transmission), air pump (if equipped), bad or worn lifters, etc.
