Headlight bulb replacement can be easy, but there are things you should know. If you just want to try it then skip to the bottom of this page where I have a great video that explains the process in detail.
What you've probably heard:
-Replacing a headlight is a snap -You don't need any tools -They are cheap and easy to replace
The Truth
-On older cars replacing the headlamp bulb usually meant replacing the whole headlamp assembly (The whole thing was the bulb). On modern cars it is no longer that way. Car manufacturers have be using halogen bulbs that are separately replaceable for many years.
Headlamp bulbs are USUALLY fairly easy to replace. On most cars you simply push and twist and it is out, but for some cars you still have to remove the headlamp assembly. Usually there are quick release tabs or buttons and you need to know where these are located and how to get them to work so you don't break anything. Your cars owners manual should show you what you need to know to do this job.
-It is true that on MANY cars you don't need any tools, but on SOME cars you do. You generally do not need any special tools.
-Headlamp bulbs are not as cheap as they used to be. Depending on what type of car you drive they could cost $20-$30. There are generally different styles and types that might cost more or less as well.
One of the most important things to remember when replacing headlamp bulbs is DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS. On most bulbs it will cause the bulb to burn out prematurely.
