Want to Try Spark Plug Replacement? Read This Info First.
If you already know you are going to try spark plug replacement yourself you can skip down to the bottom where I have a great video that explains how to change spark plugs.
What people say:
-It's easy -You only need some basic tools -Anyone can do it
The truth
-Spark plug replacement is actually a pretty easy job that most people can do themselves. Keep in mind that there are some cars that have the spark plugs in VERY hard to reach places. Most newer cars (built after 2000) have spark plugs that are pretty easy to get to. Be sure to check your owners manual or service manual first so you know what you are getting into. After you do that there are just a few things that are absolutely essential to remember.
1) Wait for the engine to cool If you skip this step you might find it impossible to remove the spark plugs from your engine without ruining the threads. This is especially true for aluminium cylinder heads.
2) Blow out any debris around the sprak plugs If you do not do this then anything that is around the spark plugs, dirt, debris, etc. will go DIRECTLY into your engine and possibly cause premature engine wear.
3) Make sure that the spark plugs screw in straight If they go in crooked they can cross thread and it is a major repair to fix this problem.
4) Only change them one at a time It is VERY easy to get them all mixed up, so just play it safe and do them one by one.
-It is true that you only need some basic tools to do this job. Be sure that you have a "spark plug socket". It is a socket that has a rubber insert to keep the plug from breaking while removing and installing it.
-It is also true that almost anyone can do it. This is not a difficult job and can be done by most people as long as the rules are followed.
